Page make-up (QuarkXPress or InDesign)
Book pages from these programs have distinctive characteristics and flaws that can be identified and diagnosed even after a short training course. Even if you have no prior experience you will quickly work on live jobs and increase your understanding of typical problems (and solutions). Topics covered include:
- what do styles do?
- the basic tools: the tools and measurements palettes; making text and picture boxes; bringing in text and picture files; document layout and style sheets
- why are even word spacing and minimum hyphenation mutually incompatible? You will produce different versions and print them out for careful analysis
- the good, the bad and the ugly: we look at what defines quality in page make-up and how we can make explicit a hierarchy of preferences.
For anyone working with page proofs, including proof-readers, production or desk editors and all production staff.
